Last week, I got to spend the weekend in Detroit, Michigan with my friend Sarah and her family! She has the sweetest little boy in the world, Elijah, and has baby #2 coming in December! I’ve been looking forward to this trip since February when I booked it. Here’s a quick recap of the adventures!
Friday Evening // New Food Experience
I arrived Friday evening and we went straight to dinner! Sarah had already warned me that we’d probably go get Middle Eastern food, which I’d never had! Oh my goodness, you guys. Best ever! I’m pretty sure Charlotte doesn’t have restaurants like this and that’s just so sad.

Saturday // History
Saturday was a cool and rainy day so we headed off to the Henry Food museum for some history! Such a cool place!

Sunday // Baseball, Belle Isle, & Tacos
After dropping Eli off with his grandma, we headed off to my first MLB game with the Detroit Tigers vs. Chicago White Sox! Here in North Carolina, we just have minor leagues (Durham Bulls and Charlotte Knights), so it was fun to be in such a huge venue!
After the game, we headed over to Belle Isle, which is an awesome little island in the Detroit River between Detroit and Canada (so weird to be that close to Canada!). After a few photo ops, we stopped at La Gloria Bakery for some Mexican pastries and then headed back to pick up the little man. Then, we headed off for some yummy tacos for dinner!
Monday // Zoo Day and Travel Adventures
Since my flight didn’t leave until 7:30pm out of Toledo, we still had nearly all day Monday for adventures so we headed off to the Zoo! We had considered heading down to Toledo early to go to their zoo, but the forecast was more favorable to stay in Detroit for a little longer. And it turned out to be a beautiful day! I hadn’t been to a Zoo since high school so it was so much fun!
After the Zoo, we headed back home for a bit, then we headed back out for the drive to Toledo, Ohio. For some reason, flights directly to/from Detroit are pricey, but when we leave out of Toledo, it cuts almost $200 off. So obviously, I took that option! But I could not stop laughing at how small the airport was! I was literally the only one in the arrival area besides the TSA agents, who gave me a personalized security check-in (“Have a good flight, Ashley”). My flight was the last departure of the day (only 4 others had left before mine) so it was me with the other 14 passengers in the terminal. I then flew to O’Hare, which is clearly the polar opposite of Toledo. When all was said and done, I landed in Charlotte just before 1am and was asleep by 2!
|Never ever have I seen a terminal this empty! Too funny!|
It was such a fun trip and I loved spending time with my sweet friend and her family. Can’t wait to visit again!
